Most small Nigerian businesses do not need to pay for a custom AI chatbot. WhatsApp now has its own built in AI agent for business accounts, called Meta Business Agent, and it is free to start. Use that and the free auto-reply tools first, move to a third party chatbot only when volume or language needs outgrow them, and consider a custom build last. This guide shows how to tell which stage you are at.
| Stage | Tool | Good When |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | WhatsApp Business app: greeting, away message, quick replies, plus Meta Business Agent (built in AI) | You want answers automated at no cost and mostly chat in English |
| 2 | Third party no-code AI chatbot trained on your FAQs | You need local languages, payments, or more control than the built in agent gives |
| 3 | Custom chatbot connected to orders or bookings | High volume and complex requests |

What a WhatsApp Chatbot Actually Does
A chatbot answers common questions automatically: prices, delivery areas, opening hours, order status. Anything it cannot answer gets passed to you. It does not replace you, it removes the repeat questions so you can focus on real sales conversations. Our guide to 5 ways to use AI in your business covers where chatbots fit in the bigger picture.
Stage 1: Free WhatsApp Business Tools and Meta’s Built In AI
The free WhatsApp Business app already includes what most small shops need:
- Greeting message sent to new contacts.
- Away message outside working hours.
- Quick replies you trigger by typing a short code, for prices, bank details, or delivery info.
- Catalog so customers can browse products inside the chat.
- Labels to track who has paid and who is waiting.
New in 2026: Meta Business Agent. Meta announced an AI agent that lives inside WhatsApp for businesses. It can answer questions about your business, recommend products from your catalog, book appointments, qualify leads, and hand over to you when a human is needed. Meta says more than 1 million businesses were already using it at launch, and that it is free to get started. Meta has also said it will move to paid subscription options in the coming months, so do not build your whole customer service around it being free forever. See Meta’s own announcement on whatsappbusiness.com.
Set all of these up before paying for anything. Write your FAQs, prices, and delivery rules down clearly first, because the AI can only answer what you have told it. Then test it with awkward questions as if you were a customer.
Stage 2: Third Party AI Chatbots
Move here when the built in agent is not enough. Typical reasons: customers write in Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa, you need the bot to take orders or confirm payments, you want one inbox across WhatsApp, Instagram and your website, or you need more control over what it says. Reports on Meta’s agent suggest it works best in English and major languages, and struggles with local languages and with local payment flows, so test before you rely on it. A third party tool lets you train the bot on your own FAQs and products. Always keep a human handoff.
Stage 3: Custom Builds
A custom chatbot connects to your store, bookings, or customer records so it can check stock, take orders, or confirm appointments. This is worth it only when volume is high and the questions are complex. For most small businesses it is more than you need, and it adds ongoing maintenance.
What It Costs
- Stage 1: the WhatsApp Business app and Meta Business Agent are free to start today, with paid options announced for later.
- Stage 2: many tools have a free tier, with paid plans as usage grows. Prices change, so check current rates.
- Stage 3: a custom project, quoted on what it needs to connect to.
If you use the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) through a provider, Meta’s pricing changed on 1 October 2026. Free form replies inside the 24 hour customer service window used to be free. Now each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, and replies after that are charged a small per message fee, and a payment method must be on file. The free WhatsApp Business app is not affected by this change. Nigeria’s per message rate is low compared with many countries, but quoted figures differ between sources, so ask any provider to show Meta’s current charges separately from their own fee.
When It Is Not Worth It
- You get a handful of chats a day. A quick reply does the job.
- Your customers need advice, negotiation, or trust before buying. People want a person.
- You have no written FAQs or clear prices yet. A bot cannot answer what you have not defined.
- Your website does not explain your products. Fix that first, a chatbot cannot rescue a confusing business.
A good website reduces repeat questions before they ever reach WhatsApp. That is why we often suggest improving the site first, see our website design and maintenance services, and the work we have done.
FAQ
Do I need the paid WhatsApp Business API?
Not to start. The free WhatsApp Business app, now with Meta Business Agent, is enough until you need automation across many staff or large message volumes. The API is also where the new 1 October 2026 service message charges apply.
Can a chatbot understand Pidgin or Yoruba?
Accuracy varies. Reports on Meta’s agent say it handles English well but struggles with local languages. Test any bot, including Meta’s, with real Pidgin and Yoruba customer messages before you rely on it.
Will customers be annoyed by a bot?
Only if it traps them. Keep answers short and make it easy to reach a human.
Is a chatbot safe with customer data?
Treat it like any system holding personal data. Avoid collecting more than you need, and ask providers how data is stored.
