To build an email list from zero in Nigeria, pick one free email tool, put a sign-up form on your website and at checkout, give people a clear reason to join, and ask for permission before you add anyone. Then send a welcome email within 24 hours. You do not need 10,000 subscribers to start. A list of 100 people who actually want your emails beats 5,000 who never asked for them.
Quick answer: your list in 6 steps

| 5. Send a welcome email | Within 24 hours of sign-up | 1 hour |

Consent first: the Nigerian rules in plain English
This is general information, not legal advice. The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA) treats email addresses as personal data. Law-firm commentary on the Act says consent must be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous, and that people have a right to object to direct marketing at any time. We have not read the Act line by line for this post, so check the official text or ask a lawyer for anything high-stakes.
One more thing worth knowing: law-firm write-ups describe a Nigerian court case where an unsubscribe link did not fix the problem of messaging people who never agreed in the first place (Akosa v Ecart, as reported by those firms). We have not read the judgment. The safe rule is simple: get a yes first, then send.
- Do not buy lists or scrape emails
- Do not add people because they gave you a business card or messaged you once
- Use a tick box that is not pre-ticked
- Say what you will send and how often
- Include an unsubscribe link in every email and honour it quickly
7 places to collect emails (and what to say)
| Where | What to say | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Website footer and blog posts | Get new product news and offers by email | Low |
| Checkout page | Tick this box if you want order updates and offers by email | Low |
| Instagram bio link | A link to a simple sign-up page | Low |
| WhatsApp Status and broadcast | Tell people they can join your email list for longer updates | Low |
| In-store or at events | A QR code to the sign-up page, with a pen and paper backup | Medium |
| A free guide or checklist | Enter your email and we will send it | Medium |
| A first-order perk | Join for early access or a thank-you offer on your first order | Medium |

Notice the pattern. Each place gives a reason to join. ‘Subscribe to our newsletter’ is not a reason. Nobody wakes up wanting a newsletter.
Lead magnet ideas for Nigerian brands
A lead magnet is a small free thing in exchange for an email address. Keep it useful and quick to make:
- Fashion: a styling guide for 5 occasions (owambe, office, church, date night, travel)
- Food and grocery: a weekly meal plan with a shopping list
- Skincare and beauty: a routine checklist by skin type
- Service business: a short checklist that solves one problem
- Any store: early access to new arrivals or restocks
Fill in your own offer in the copy below. Do not promise a discount unless you will honour it.
Free email tools compared (checked 30 October 2026)
Free plans change often, so treat this as a snapshot and confirm on each pricing page before you commit.
| Tool | Free plan limits shown by the vendor | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mailchimp | 250 contacts, 500 sends a month or 250 a day | No automation flows on the free plan, and Mailchimp branding stays on your emails |
| MailerLite | 250 subscribers, 2,500 emails a month, 3 forms, 1 landing page, 3 automations | Sending locks if you go above 250 subscribers on the free plan |
| Brevo | Widely reported as 300 emails a day | We could not confirm the contact limit from Brevo’s own page, so check it before you rely on it |
Whichever you choose, pick one that lets you add sign-up forms and send automatic welcome emails. If you run a WooCommerce store, see how to send abandoned cart emails too.
Your first 30 days

| Week 4 | Check opens and clicks, and fix the subject line | Learn what your people read |
Want the full plan? Our 30 day email marketing plan goes deeper, and 5 email automations every online store needs shows what to send automatically.
Checklist: is your list set up properly?
- You have one free email tool chosen and an account created
- Your sign-up form says what people will receive and how often
- The consent box is not pre-ticked
- Your privacy policy is linked near the form
- A welcome email sends automatically
- Every email has a working unsubscribe link
- You can see where each subscriber came from
- You have sent a test to your own phone and checked it displays well
Mistakes that slow your list down
- Hiding the form in the footer only
- Asking for too much information (name and email is enough)
- Waiting weeks to send the first email, when people have forgotten you
- Emailing only discounts, so people unsubscribe
- Importing old contacts who never agreed

| Modebola Foods | Grocery store | Checkout and footer, with a weekly meal plan |
| Sparkle by Sarabell | Fashion store | Lookbook pages, with early access to new collections |
| Dashel Stores | Large retail store | Checkout and category pages, with restock alerts |

Frequently asked questions
How many subscribers do I need to start sending emails?
None beyond a handful. Start with 20 or 30 people who asked to hear from you and send them something useful. Growth comes from consistency.
Can I email people from my WhatsApp contacts?
Not without their permission. Invite them to join your list through a link and let them choose. Adding people who never agreed is risky under the NDPA.
Do I need a website to build an email list?
It helps, because you control the sign-up page and checkout. But you can start with a simple sign-up page from your email tool and link it in your Instagram bio.
What should my first email say?
Welcome them, say what to expect and how often, and give them one useful thing (a guide, a best-seller list, or the offer you promised).
Is a free email tool good enough?
For your first few hundred subscribers, usually yes. Move to a paid plan when you hit the limits or need features like abandoned cart flows.
Want your sign-up forms set up properly?
We can add forms to your website and checkout and connect them to your email tool, with consent wording that is clear.
