Why Email Still Matters

Social media reach depends on an algorithm you do not control. An email list is a group of people who asked to hear from you, and you keep it even if a platform changes or an account gets suspended. For most small businesses it is the cheapest way to bring past customers back.

Week 1: Choose a Platform and Set Up

Several well known platforms offer free plans, but the limits have been shrinking, so read them before you commit. At the time of writing, MailerLite lists its Free plan as up to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, with 3 automations and its logo on your emails (it was more generous before a June 2026 change). Reports put Mailchimp free at about 250 contacts and 500 emails a month without automations, and Brevo free at about 300 emails a day with Brevo branding. Check each platform’s pricing page for current limits, because they change often. For a brand new list, a free plan is enough to start.

  1. Create an account with a business email, not a personal Gmail.
  2. Add your business name, address, and logo.
  3. Create a sign up form and place it on your website.
  4. Ask your web developer to verify your sending domain so your emails reach the inbox instead of spam.

Week 2: Build Your List the Right Way

Only email people who agreed to hear from you. Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, consent for direct marketing must be freely given, specific, and clear, given by an actual action. Silence does not count, pre-ticked boxes do not count, and the business has to be able to prove consent if asked. People can also object to marketing at any time, so every email needs an easy unsubscribe link and you must honour it. Sending to bought lists breaks all of this and gets you marked as spam fast. This is general information, not legal advice. Good ways to collect addresses:

  • A sign up form on your website with a clear reason to join, such as a discount or a useful guide.
  • A sign up link in your WhatsApp status and Instagram bio.
  • A tablet or paper form at your shop counter, with a line telling people they will receive emails.
  • A tick box at checkout if you run an online store.

Week 3: Send Your First Emails

Welcome email. Send it automatically when someone joins. Say who you are, what they will receive, and give one clear next step.

First campaign. Keep it short. One topic, one picture, one button. Good first ideas: a new product, a useful tip from your industry, or a customer story. Write the subject line like a message to a friend, not an advert.

Week 4: Measure and Repeat

Look at 3 numbers: how many opened, how many clicked, and how many unsubscribed. Do not panic about small lists or small numbers at the start. Pick a rhythm you can keep, such as 1 email every 2 weeks, and stick to it. Consistency beats volume.

Do It Yourself or Have It Managed?

Doing it yourself costs time rather than money. Having it managed costs money but gives you the time back and usually better results, because someone is writing, designing, and tracking every campaign.

FAQ

How many subscribers do I need to start?

None. Start with the customers you already have, with their permission, and grow from there.

Is email marketing still worth it with WhatsApp and Instagram?

Yes. They work together. Social and WhatsApp reach people quickly, while email gives you a list you own and can send longer, more detailed messages to.

How often should I send emails?

Start with once every 2 weeks, then move to weekly if you have enough useful things to say.

Will my emails go to spam?

Fewer will if your sending domain is verified, you only email people who opted in, and your subject lines are honest.
