AI can write a good first draft of a product description in seconds, but it sells only when you give it real product facts, tell it who the buyer is, and edit the result. Feed it a clear prompt (product, buyer, 3 benefits, tone, length), then check every claim, size, material and price before you publish. Used that way, it saves hours on a big catalogue. Used lazily, it gives you 200 products that all sound the same.
Quick answer: the 5-step method
| Step | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Collect facts | Material, size, colours, price, delivery, care instructions | AI invents details when you leave gaps |
| 2. Name the buyer | Who buys this and what problem does it solve? | Specific copy beats generic copy |
| 3. Use a prompt template | Paste the facts into a fixed prompt (below) | Consistent results across products |
| 4. Edit like a human | Fix facts, remove fluff, add your brand voice | AI can contain errors |
| 5. Publish and watch | Check which products get clicks and orders | Improve the template over time |

Why most AI product descriptions fail
Ask a chatbot to “write a product description for a bag” and you get something like “elevate your style with this versatile, high-quality bag.” Nobody has ever bought anything because of that sentence. (It is the copy equivalent of fufu with no soup.)
Google’s guidance on AI content says generative AI can be useful, but warns that using it to produce many pages without adding value for users may count as spam, and that you should manually fact-check and review all AI-generated content. That applies to product titles and descriptions too. So the goal is not 1,000 AI pages. It is useful pages that happen to be written faster.

A prompt template for product descriptions
Copy this, fill in the brackets, and paste it into ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or any chat assistant you use. For more ready-made prompts, see our ChatGPT prompts for Nigerian small business owners.
Facts (use only these): [material], [size], [colours], [price in naira], [delivery time], [care instructions].
Buyer: [who buys it and why].
3 benefits to stress: [benefit 1], [benefit 2], [benefit 3].
Tone: friendly, clear, a little playful. Short sentences.
Format: 1 headline (under 10 words), 1 short paragraph (60 to 80 words), 4 bullet points, 1 closing line. Do not invent features, materials or guarantees that are not in the facts.
A made-up example (for illustration only)
Here is a quick idea of the difference. These are invented products to show the method, not client results.
| Version | Copy | What is wrong or right |
|---|---|---|
| Lazy prompt | “Elevate your style with this high-quality, versatile tote bag.” | Vague. No size, no material, no reason to buy |
| Template prompt, edited | “A roomy ankara tote that fits a 15-inch laptop and your lunch. Lined inside, with a zip pocket for your keys. Delivery in 2 to 4 days within Lagos.” | Specific and checkable (the facts are yours, so verify them) |
Which AI tool should you use?
| Option | What it does | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Chat assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) | You paste a prompt and copy the result into your store | Manual copying. Free plans have limits, so check the current plan details. See our free AI tools guide |
| Shopify’s built-in assistant | Shopify’s help centre says its assistant (Sidekick) can write product descriptions from a product page | Always review the output before publishing |
| WooCommerce AI plugins | Third-party plugins can generate descriptions inside the product editor | We found no generator built into WooCommerce itself. Each plugin has its own pricing and data handling, so read the terms before use |
| A human writer | Costs more and takes longer | Best for your 5 to 10 hero products |
A practical split: use AI for the long tail of products, and write your top sellers by hand (or edit very heavily).

Checklist: check every AI description before publishing
- Every size, material, colour and care instruction matches the real product.
- The price and delivery time are right and in naira.
- No fake claims such as “certified”, “clinically proven” or “best in Nigeria” unless you can prove them.
- No invented reviews, ingredients or guarantees.
- The tone sounds like your brand, not a robot reading a brochure.
- The first line says what the product is and who it is for.
- The description reads differently from your other products (no copy and paste of the same structure 50 times).
- Your keyword appears once or twice, naturally.
- Photos, alt text and the title match the description.
- If you sell skincare, food or health items, a qualified person has checked the claims.
AI copy, Google and product pages
Google does not forbid AI content. Its guidance asks for helpful content and manual review. Two more details from its guidance matter for online stores. First, review titles, meta descriptions and image alt text the same way as body copy. Second, if you list products in Google Merchant Center, AI-generated product data should be labelled as such, so read Google’s current guidance before you upload a big batch.
Real Cterling projects: stores with big catalogues
These are examples of store types we have built, where faster, cleaner product copy could help. They are not results from AI descriptions.
| Business | Type | What was built | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dashel Stores | Retail | A responsive WooCommerce store built to handle 1,000+ products | A large catalogue is where a repeatable prompt saves the most time |
| Pearls Organic | Organic skincare | A WooCommerce store with clear product pages | Skincare needs careful, accurate claims |
| Sparkle by Sarabell | Ready-to-wear fashion | A mobile-first WooCommerce store with lookbook-style galleries | Fashion copy needs a clear brand voice |

FAQ: AI product descriptions
Can AI write product descriptions that sell?
It can write a solid first draft, but only if you give it real product facts and a clear buyer. You still need to edit and fact-check, and your own photos and prices do much of the selling.
Is AI-written product copy bad for SEO?
Google’s guidance says AI content is not banned, but producing lots of pages without adding value may be treated as spam, and it asks you to fact-check and review AI content. Write for shoppers first.
What is the best AI tool for product descriptions?
There is no single best tool. A chat assistant works for most small stores. Shopify’s assistant is convenient on Shopify, and WooCommerce has third-party plugins. Try the free option first.
How do I stop AI from making things up?
Tell it to use only the facts you supply, ban claims that are not in your list, and check the result against the real product. AI predicts words, so it can sound sure and be wrong.
Should I tell customers my descriptions are AI-assisted?
It is not required for most product pages, but Google suggests considering how you disclose automation, and Merchant Center has labelling rules for AI-generated product data. If in doubt, read the current rules.
Can AI write descriptions in Pidgin or Yoruba?
It can try, but quality varies and it makes more mistakes. Have a native speaker read it before publishing.
